Attorney General Pruitt Selects Assistant Attorney General Tom Bates to Serve as First Assistant AG

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Scott Pruitt Tuesday announced longtime prosecutor and assistant attorney general Tom Bates as the new First Assistant Attorney General. Bates will replace Rob Hudson, who begins his new job as a special judge in Logan County on Nov. 1.

“Tom is a hard-working and committed attorney who has been dedicated to justice and fairness for Oklahomans throughout his career,” Pruitt said. “We are fortunate to have attorneys like Tom in public service and I look forward to his contributions as First Assistant.”

Bates, a native Oklahoman, most recently served as chief of the Attorney General’s Public Protection Unit where he oversaw the Oklahoma Mortgage Settlement Fund, the Do Not Call Registry and was the lead assistant attorney general on all consumer protection litigation.

Bates worked in private practice for five years before joining the Attorney General’s Office in 1999. He prosecuted and litigated a variety of high profile civil and criminal cases and served as chief of the AG’s Multicounty Grand Jury Unit.

“I am passionate about the great work the Attorney General's Office does for the people of Oklahoma,” Bates said. “I am both humbled and honored that Attorney General Pruitt has asked me to serve as his First Assistant. I look forward to implementing his vision and goals for the office.”

Bates received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1991 and a Juris Doctor in 1994, both from Oklahoma City University. Bates is a graduate of Leadership Bethany and served on the Bethany Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He also is a graduate of the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Leadership Academy.

He and his wife, Kellye Fine Bates, who also is an attorney, have been married for 23 years. They live in Oklahoma City with their sons, Andy and Billy.
